Safe Swimming for Kids - Swimming Pool Safety

Water is everywhere.  Are your children prepared?  Make child swim safety a priority in your home.

Drowning is the #1 cause of death for children 1 to 4.

Did you know that drowning can occur in as little as 2" of water? ECAS can help you protect your children with five steps to prevent drowning:

  1. Understanding hazards
  2. Supervision
  3. Layers of protection (fencing, door chimes, etc.)
  4. Swimming lessons as early as 6 months
  5. CPR training

Swimming is a fun family activity - and the only sport that could save your life!  Go to everychildaswimmer.org to learn more and to find a swim lesson near you.

EVERY CHILD, WATER SMART.

https://watersmarttots.org/

The Water Smart Tots Foundation is dedicated to combatting childhood drownings in the Greater Tampa Bay area. Since our inception in 2014, The Water Smart Tots Foundation has worked tirelessly to educate families on drowning prevention through our preschool water safety education and by providing scholarships for one-on-one, survival swim lessons to financially underprivileged children in the Tampa Bay area.

  • Drowning is the leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 4.
  • 88% of drownings occur with at least one adult present.
  • Drowning is silent, and can happen in as fast as 30 seconds.
  • Almost 70% of childhood drownings happen during non-swim times.
  • We lose 10 school buses of children to unintentional drownings each year.

Learn How to Keep Children Safer Around Pools and Spas

  1. Supervise Children: Always watch children in or near water, never leave them unattended.
  2. Learn to Swim: Teach children how to swim.
  3. Know Your Drains: Teach children to stay away from drains.
  4. Ensure Compliance: Ensure all pools and spas have compliant drain covers.
  5. Install Safety Devices: Install barriers, covers and alarms.
  6. Get Certified: Know how to perform CPR on children and adults.
  7. Take the Pledge: Take the Pool Safely Pledge!

I pledge that I will...

  • Designate a water watcher every single time children in my care are in or near the water.
  • Make sure my kids know how to swim.
  • As a parent or guardian, learn CPR.
  • Always remove portable pool ladders when not in use.
  • Ensure all permanent pools have a proper fence and gate and safer drain covers.

Whether you’re a parent with a backyard pool or an adult who enjoys a day at the beach, drowning prevention and water safety education should always be a priority.

We can end drowning in our lifetime. Public awareness and education focused on young children is the most powerful tool to prevent fatal and non-fatal drowning.
